
How to surrender PAN Card in India?
Every taxpayer in India, be it an individual, a company, a trust or a HUF, must have a PAN card, a unique 10-digit alphanumeric code. Sometimes, however, you may need to surrender your PAN card, and there is a prescribed procedure to do so. Follow our step-by-step guide on how to surrender your PAN card online and offline.

HOW TO SURRENDER YOUR PAN CARD ONLINE?
All PAN card holders can use this method to surrender unwanted PANs.
Step 1: Visit the following link for PAN card change request: https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/pan/correctiondsc.html
Step 2: Read the instructions carefully and scroll to the bottom and choose the appropriate entity in the drop-down menu. And click submit to open a change request form.
Step 3: Mention the PAN that you wish to retain in the field provided at the top of the form
Step 4: Mention all other PANs that you wish to surrender in section 14
Step 5: Fill in all the other mandatory and relevant details
Step 6: Submit all the required proof, including copies of surrendered PANs, along with the application.
Step 7: Once you complete the application you will receive a 15-digit acknowledgement number and the filled-up application form.
Step 8: Save and print the application form
Step 9: Attach relevant documents, including copies of the surrendered PAN if you hadn’t done so online, and send the application form to NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited, 5th floor, Mantri Sterling, Plot No. 341, Survey No. 997/8, Model Colony, Near Deep Bungalow Chowk, Pune – 411016′
Step 10: Use the 15-digit acknowledgement number to track the status of your request
Step 11: Once your request is completed (usually within 2 weeks), you will receive confirmation on your mobile number
Step 12: If you have a digital signature, you can use the paperless route. Just check box the DSC option, and submit the required documents.
HOW CAN PAN CARD BE SURRENDERED OFFLINE?
You can surrender your PAN offline by writing a letter to the Income Tax department. Here’s how you can do it:
- Write a letter to your Assessing Officer (where you file your income taxes)
- Include details such as name, date of birth and the PAN you are surrendering
- Hand over the letter at the income tax office or PAN facilitation center (find details on this link: https://www.tin-nsdl.com/tin-facilities.html).
- our request will take 14 days to get processed
PAN CARD CANCELLATION IN CASE OF DEATH OF THE INDIVIDUAL HOLDER
In case of death of individual holder, the PAN card cancellation process should be initiated by following the below mentioned steps:
- A relative of the deceased should write a letter to the Income Tax Department
- Include the deceased’s death certificate, details such as PAN number, name and date of birth
- The PAN cancellation will happen in 7 days
You may be penalized if you hold more than one PAN card at any point of time. If you have more than one PAN allotted to you, either inadvertently or due to a mistake on your part, follow the steps above to cancel the additional ones.
